Revised Common Lectionary : Liturgical Year "B"

Wednesday 25th

Scripture: Matthew 6:1-21

Reflection:

In these passages Jesus warns against pride and hypocrisy. He gives us clear illustrations, directions, about how to avoid empty, showy, displays of piety, religiosity and vanity. In this Lenten period, we could be open to the temptation of such displays ourselves. You know the sort of thing “oh I can’t possibly do such and such because it’s Lent”. Sometime today, could you have caught yourself doing what Jesus cautioned against? How will you spend this Lent?

Thursday 26th

Scripture: Luke 9:21-25

Reflection:

Did you notice that carrying the cross is voluntary. It is not something imposed upon us, but something we do - daily. Have you ever thought of the cross you carry as a follower of Christ. Is it one you chose or do you think of it as being imposed upon you? Why do you carry it?

Friday 27th

Scripture: Matthew 9:14-15

Reflection:

John’s disciples asked a reasonable question. Why were Jesus’ disciples different from everyone else. Jesus’ reply, was probably not what they expected. But why don’t we ask ourselves the same question. As followers of Jesus, are we different from those around us? Are we living our discipleship, or trying to merge into the world?

Saturday 28th

Scripture: Luke 5:27-32

Reflection:

The Pharisees and Scribes knew who was at Levi’s banquet, sinners and tax collectors. People to be shunned, outcast, ignored, and rejected. The very people Jesus was accepting – they were rejecting. Perhaps no two groups could be more different. This Lent see if you can catch yourself being a Pharisee or a Scribe, then ask yourself, would Jesus have rejected the person you just did?
