January 2010

Revised Common Lectionary : Liturgical Year "C"

Friday 1st

Scripture:   Luke 2:16-21

Reflection:

Names are important. They define who we are and the way the world knows us. Some people like their names, others prefer to use their second or third given names rather than their first. Some take new names altogether. The angel Gabriel told Mary that the child was to be called Jesus. Who chose your name? Do you like it? Have you changed it?

Saturday 2nd

Scripture:   John 1:19-28

Reflection:

John knew what he had been asked to do. He knew what was expected of him. He didn’t try to be more than he was. So those who were questioning him weren't given the answers they expected. Could it be that when we become disillusioned, burnt out, or disheartened with our lives as Christians, it is not because we have lost our faith, but rather because we have tried to do more than we were asked to do.

Sunday 3rd

Scripture:   John 1:29-34

Reflection:

John used the opportunities presented to him by the Holy Spirit, to spread the news and to do his work of baptism. We are sometimes also given an insight, an opportunity to spread the good news. It is what we do with the opportunity that will either give us a glimpse of the possibilities of our work, or leave us somewhat baffled.

Monday 4th

Scripture:   John 1:35-42

Reflection:

Andrew brought Peter to Jesus. We often do this - bring people to Jesus. Some will stay, and others will not. These are choices the individual makes. We should not be disheartened, or disillusioned by some of the choices people make - our task was to bring the message. Leave the rest to God.

Tuesday 5th

Scripture:   John 1:43-51

Reflection:

"Nathanael said to him, ‘Can anything good come out of Nazareth?’ Philip said to him, ‘Come and see.’" (verse 46). Do you ever catch yourself making remarks like Nathanael's? It is probably something we have all done at some point in our lives. We are all prone to making judgements based on perceptions? But look at what Philip says. "come and see". When Nathanael went, he changed his opinion. Could this happen to you? Are you perhaps scared of that possibility?

Sunday 31st

Scripture:   Luke 4:21-30

Reflection:

We generally think of a prophet as someone who predicts the future.  But the word prophet is also used to describe someone who calls out to those unwilling to hear. This prophet tells people not only the good the news about God's love, but also brings to the notice of the world the deeds people would prefer remained hidden. As Jesus says this makes them unpopular in their home town.  So how are you at being a prophet of the good news?
